How can I use a portable monitor with my PC setup?

I recently purchased an ASUS MB166C portable monitor to use as a second screen, but I realized too late that it requires a USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, which isn't supported by my MSI B450M Mortar Max motherboard. The store won't accept the return due to a tiny scratch on the back. Is there any way I can still use this monitor with my PC? Let me know if you need more info!

Unfortunately, your current setup won’t work with that monitor as is. Even if you manage to get a DisplayPort to USB-C adapter, it won’t provide power to the monitor since it only has one USB-C input for both video and power. You could look into getting a Thunderbolt PCIe add-in card, but that comes with its own set of complications, and it might not even be compatible with your motherboard. Honestly, with the hassle, you’d likely be better off returning the monitor and getting a different one that supports standard inputs with external power.

You might just need the right cable! Check what outputs your graphics card has because it's usually not ideal to connect a display to the motherboard. There are HDMI to USB-C or DisplayPort to USB-C cables that could work. I’m surprised this monitor didn’t come with one of those options already!
