Hi everyone! We're an independent software vendor (ISV) and currently host our workloads on AWS and Google Cloud. We're starting a new project in mainland China, where all data must remain within the country's borders. I looked into our existing AWS account but couldn't find any regions in China. I attempted to create an account through amazonaws.cn, but it requires a local Chinese business license that we don't have. I'm looking for possible solutions and would really appreciate your guidance. Thanks!

You could find a local partner in China who can handle getting the necessary licenses for you. Also, double-check with your client about the data residency requirement - sometimes it's a common misconception that it applies universally.
Hi Peter, I work with an official AWS partner based in Chongqing, and we can definitely help you with solutions for AWS in China. Feel free to reach out!
Just a heads-up, AWS China is treated as a separate entity, much like GovCloud. This means different rules and setups apply, so make sure you're aware of that as you proceed.
To get an account in China, you’ll need a business license and ICP licenses if you're exposing domains. It's a good idea to consult with your legal team or hire a lawyer who specializes in this area to help you navigate the licensing process. You might also consider other cloud providers that have better support for China, as there are notable differences in features compared to US offerings.
If you're already using AWS, reach out to your account manager. They can connect you with the China sales team who are experts in this area. Keep in mind, you will likely need a local presence (like an employee or partner in China) to manage compliance. Alternatively, Alibaba Cloud has a non-ICP option, but it comes with its own set of limitations.
Exactly! Your AWS team should be able to provide guidance specific to AWS in China, and they can help you navigate the setup process.
Totally agree with you! AWS China operates separately, so reaching out to them is key.
