How Do I Start Redeveloping My Website?

I'm looking to redevelop our basic website, particularly the public-facing pages. The tricky part is that our website is linked to a backend portal, which we don't want to update just yet. We no longer work with the original developers for various reasons, and I'm not really sure how the site was built or what platform it uses. Does anyone know an easy way for me to find this out? I'm hoping to get clarity so I can approach the right developer for the job. Also, if there's any Canadian-based agency recommendations, I'd appreciate that!

Could you share the URL of your site? That might help us see what's going on.

You can start by checking your website's source code—just right-click and select 'View Page Source.' Look for any hints like CMS tags (e.g., WordPress, Wix) or frameworks. There are also handy tools like BuiltWith or Wappalyzer that can help you identify the tech stack automatically. Additionally, checking your domain host or registrar might reveal any linked services. Before reaching out to new developers, make a list of the improvements you want. Since you're in Canada, you might want to find local agencies experienced in overhauling sites without affecting backend systems.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check that out later today. I definitely want to have everything lined up before I reach out to developers to save time.

I totally get your frustration. We had a similar experience with our dev team. They handled everything from development to admin tasks, but over time, we faced issues with costs and timelines, so we decided to part ways. Now, years later, we're in a spot where we want to update the site without messing with the backend, which is why we're in this situation.

Just wondering, didn't the previous development team provide you with the source code? Did you only receive the website that's running online? It sounds like you're using an admin dashboard without much technical knowledge. Sorry for the questions, but it’s unfortunate to hear you’re in this situation.

It’s important to know what tech stack you’re dealing with first. That way, we can recommend solutions that will fit your project best without too much hassle. Do you have a login? If so, what do you usually log into? Have you ever changed any content? Also, do you know where your site is hosted?
