How to Handle Clients Changing Requirements During Mobile App Development?

I run a small mobile app development service and have recently faced challenges with clients who keep adding new features after we've already locked in the project scope. They seem to expect these changes to be implemented without any additional costs or adjustments to timelines. I'm looking for advice on how to navigate these conversations while keeping the clients happy. Are there any effective scripts or email templates that you use to manage such situations?

Honestly, I bill based on time and materials. If a client wants to make a change, I discuss it with them and explain how it affects the timeline. If they're not on board, that's their choice, and I’m okay with it.

One approach I find helpful is to avoid discussing scope changes during calls. Instead, I say something like, 'I'd be happy to add that to the project. I'll send over a change request, and you can decide if it replaces something in scope, gets moved to phase 2, or impacts the budget or timeline.' Putting it in writing usually makes clients think through the impact more seriously.

I think it's crucial to charge for every change. You should have that clearly stated in your contract from the beginning. That way, when clients want something new, they're aware that there will be additional costs involved.

It's essential to frame it as a scope and expectations issue rather than trying to script it. Anything outside the agreed scope should be treated as a change request with updated costs or timeline. Once clients see this consistently, they often limit their requests mid-project.
