I'm setting up a dual-boot on my PC with 256 GB of storage. I've got 8 GB of RAM and about 97 GB free on my current Windows installation. I also plan to remove an extra partition of 8.78 GB. I'm leaning towards using Linux Mint XFCE because it's lightweight, as recommended by my friends. My goals are to reduce fan noise during sleep, manage my RAM better than Windows, do some light gaming (I have one game that supports Steam and Linux), and explore Linux before transitioning to it fully or mostly. I'd like some advice! Is Mint a good choice for me? How much space should I allocate for Linux? I was thinking about using 15-20 GB and the rest for Linux. Thanks in advance!

For your needs, you'll really only need two partitions: a /boot partition of about 1 GB and a / root partition between 15-25 GB. If you're planning on installing games and more software, you should consider keeping around 70 GB for everything. Also, think about adding a /home partition to keep your personal files separate from the OS.
Linux Mint is a fantastic choice for beginners! It's user-friendly, lightweight, and generally just works well across different hardware. You won't regret going with it for your setup.
If gaming is your main focus, I'd recommend checking out Bazzite or Fedora. I've found Fedora to have a modern feel and it's polished nicely. Mint is stable and does the job great. I've been using Fedora on my main laptop for 2 years and love it!
