I have a couple of old computers, specifically a few desktops and laptops, that are no longer working. I want to recover the files from their hard drives and transfer them to my modern PC running Ubuntu. What's the easiest way to do this? Also, I've heard about compatibility issues, so I'm wondering if Windows files can actually be accessed on Linux without any problems.

Another option is to use a live Linux USB. You can boot your newer Ubuntu PC with a live distro and connect the old drives as external. From there, you can easily transfer files to your primary system. Just remember to locate where the drives get mounted in the live environment, and you’ll be set!
The best way to go about this is to remove the hard drives from your old machines. You can get a SATA to USB adapter to convert them into external drives. Ubuntu actually supports the NTFS file system, so you should be able to access your files without any trouble. Just keep in mind that while you can retrieve documents and media, you won't be able to run any Windows applications on Linux, as they’re not compatible.
