How to Safely Move My Windows 11 Desktop Without Causing Issues?

I need to move my Windows 11 desktop between rooms, and while it worked fine the first few times, now I'm having issues. Recently, after moving it, my computer wouldn't boot at all. It just showed the motherboard screen and then went black, without any errors or blue screens, saying 'no signal.' I might've turned off the power supply while it was in sleep mode, which I think caused this corruption. I tried restoring an image but ended up doing a complete reset to fix it. Now that I've had to move it again, I followed the same shutdown and unplugging process, but it's dead again. Can anyone explain what's happening? What steps should I take to ensure it's moved safely? What precautions should I be taking?

Make sure you wait a bit after shutting down before unplugging it. Waiting helps dissipate any electrical charge that might cause issues when unplugging. But the general rule of thumb is to be gentle and avoid moving it too much while it's on or still hooked up to power.

That's solid advice! Even if it seems fine, it’s best to be cautious.

Exactly! Power off, unplug, and give it a moment before you move. It could save you a lot of trouble.

It's likely that moving the system is causing a loose connection somewhere. If it's still under warranty, you might want to consider taking it to a professional to ensure nothing is damaged during transport.

Good point! I'll look into taking it somewhere if it keeps happening.

Definitely a good idea to check with a pro if you're unsure or if the moves continue to be problematic!

You might want to check the health of your SSD or any hard drives. If they’re old, movement can sometimes lead to issues, especially if they’re not SSDs. Run some diagnostics to be sure everything is functioning well.

How do I check the health of my SSD and what tools should I use?

TechieTina -

You can use programs like CrystalDiskInfo or the built-in Windows tools to check your drive's health.

It sounds like your desktop may have some loose connections. After moving, always double-check to make sure everything is plugged in securely, especially the RAM and GPU, as they can shift during transportation.

Totally agree! I once had a GPU connector that came loose during a move, and it caused all sorts of issues.

Also, ensure that the power connectors to your drives are secure too. That can often cause boot issues.
