How to Set a Static IP for My Jellyfin Server?

I've got Jellyfin set up and running on my local network, but after moving my router around, it got a new IP address. This isn't a huge issue, but I want to avoid having to update all my devices every time there's a power outage or the router resets. My ISP, Xfinity, doesn't offer static IP addresses unless I switch to a business plan, so I'm thinking of tackling this through Ubuntu 24.04. Before I get too deep into changing settings, are there any other options I should consider to avoid this hassle in the future?

And just to clarify, your issue seems to be with local access. If your router has the option for "sticky" local IP addresses, you can utilize that. This should resolve issues when the router resets, and your devices will continue to connect to the Jellyfin server without updating.

To make your devices consistently connect to your Jellyfin server, look into setting a static local IP address on the device running Jellyfin through your router's DHCP settings. If you want to access it remotely, consider using a dynamic DNS service like dynv6 or no-ip for free. This way, you can connect using a domain name instead of worrying about the changing IP address.

You can set a static IP directly in your network settings, bypassing the DHCP. Just enter the correct IP address, subnet mask, and gateway from your current settings, and it should stick.

It sounds like you're mixing up your local and public IPs. If Jellyfin is just for local access, setting a static local IP is simple. You can tweak your router settings to allocate a specific IP address to the device running Jellyfin. Ubuntu isn't your only option; most routers support this feature directly.
