Hey everyone! I'm working on configuring RDP for a company where the servers are part of a workgroup instead of a domain. I have two servers set up for this—one is the main server, and the other will be a backup that they plan to turn on only if the primary fails. Previously, I faced issues with RDP settings because the management tools expect a domain setup. I'm looking for advice on how to best configure RDP to ensure stable and reliable performance. I've added 16 users to the RDS group and purchased Per Device CALs, which I've heard are more suitable in this kind of deployment. Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated! Have you thought about why they prefer to stay in a workgroup instead of setting up a domain? If they're manually starting the backup server, they might run into challenges with failover management. Clarifying how you're managing identities on the RDP server could help, too.

Just a heads up: setting this up the way you described could potentially run afoul of licensing agreements. You might need to buy extra RDP CALs to stay compliant. Honestly, operating outside of a domain setup for RDP like this seems risky.

In my experience, I've set up RDS roles on standalone servers using the server manager without issues. It’s best to use the wizard for setting up RDS; it ensures that all the necessary configurations are correctly done. If you skip that, you might face ongoing issues.

For a simple setup like yours, you can run the RDS Host and RDS Licensing on the same machine without much hassle. Just make sure your users connect via a VPN for security, and provide them with an RDP shortcut pre-configured with their credentials.
