Hi everyone! I'm currently based in New Zealand and have spent about 15 years working in IT Systems Administration, mostly focused on the Wintel environment (think Windows Server, VMware, Azure AD, Active Directory). I've been struggling to find work lately and have been unemployed for the last six months. I'm curious about the job market in Australia, particularly for Senior Systems Administrators. Is it any better than what I'm experiencing here?

Honestly, the market is tough. You're up against cheaper labor from countries like India and the Philippines and there are local managed service providers that might not offer great wages. Plus, the demand is shifting towards DevOps and engineering skills, which might put you at a disadvantage unless you have those qualifications.

You actually don’t need to move before you start job hunting! It’s worth trying to find a job first; some companies might even pay for your relocation. It can be difficult, but it’s not impossible.

I checked job listings for "Systems Administration" in Australia, and there are around 4,500 jobs available. While not all of them are pure IT roles, it's a decent start. Plenty of Kiwis have relocated to places like Western Australia, so consider broadening your search area!

Look into roles focused on voice and communication technologies. There's a high demand for skills related to SIP and cloud PBX in Australia right now. So if that interests you, it might be worth diving into those areas.

The job scene in Australia could be better than in New Zealand, but trying to find tech jobs here can be really stressful. The process is pretty grueling, involving multiple interviews and practical tests. Personally, I've only made it through thanks to a favorable first impression many years ago, but the hiring landscape today feels much more competitive.
