Hey everyone! I'm starting my first year as a computer science student, and with classes kicking off in just a week, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. As a complete beginner, I really don't know where to start in learning. I'd love any guidance, tips, or personal experiences you can share about how you got started. My goal is to build a solid foundation without wasting time going in circles. Any advice on the best direction to take would be amazing. Thanks a lot!

You’ve got a couple of options to kick things off! One approach is to choose a niche that interests you—whether it's web development, AI, gaming, or something else. Knowing where you want to focus can help guide your learning path. If you're not sure yet, the Harvard CS50 course is highly recommended as a solid introduction to programming. It's helped a lot of students make sense of the basics!

Option 2 sounds great, but how do I figure out what my niche is? Any tips?

Totally agree, CS50 sounds like a good starting point!

Check out these resources to get started:
1. "Beginner's Step-by-step Coding Course" by DK Publishing.
2. "Python Crash Course" by James Deep.
I've also heard that "Confident Coding" by Rob Percival is fantastic for beginners—it covers a range of topics from HTML to Python. Libraries might have it, or you can find it second-hand online!

These sound really useful, thanks for sharing!

I'd suggest finding a project you're passionate about and working on it from start to finish. You'll learn a lot more this way. Avoid just copying code from AI; instead, use it to understand concepts—like asking it to explain how to build a timer in Python without giving you the code. Also, join a community forum or Discord, and don’t hesitate to ask questions in class; no question is too silly! Oh, and check out exercism.org for coding exercises.

Great advice! I'll definitely try to find a project that excites me.
