I'm looking to upgrade our student lab's clock-in system, where students simply enter their 10-digit ID to log their time in the lab. Currently, they use a Windows 10 device, but having to log into Windows first seems complicated for such a quick task. With Windows 10 support winding down, I'm considering alternatives. I've thought about using an iPad managed through Intune with a kiosk app, but I've heard mixed reviews regarding their reliability in kiosk mode. Has anyone had a good experience using an iPad for a similar purpose over a period of at least six months? If iPads aren't recommended, what Linux distribution would work best as a kiosk? I'm not looking to go back to Windows, as it was a hassle in my previous job.

We've been using an iPad (Gen 6, 2018) with Envoy, locked in single-app mode through Intune, and honestly, I forget it even exists for 6 to 9 months. It's super reliable, auto-updates, and needs no extra logins—just pure kiosk functionality. Try to keep it simple!
If you're ever considering Windows, something like a Surface Go can work with Chrome kiosk settings, but honestly, I would stick with the iPad if you're looking for a straightforward setup!
I really prefer iPads because there's a great variety of accessories you can get, like wall and desk mounts, plus security cases to prevent theft. I've used iPads for clocking in and as guest management systems without any issues. They hold up well and are ready to go when you toss them in kiosk mode.
We have a small fleet of iPads for clocking in and out, and we lock them down with MDM into single-app mode. Just a couple of reboots a year when daylight saving time changes, but other than that, they run without issues. Just keep a note on how to force a reset if necessary!

That's exactly what I'm aiming for—a set-and-forget solution! Do you turn off the iPad at night or just let it run continuously?
