Is Arch Linux the Right Choice for a New User Like Me?

I'm considering switching from Windows 11 Pro to Arch Linux on my Lenovo Legion 5, which has a 1TB SSD, 16GB of RAM, an RTX 4060, and an Intel Core i7 13th gen processor. Although I don't experience major issues with Windows, I'm curious about Linux, especially since I mainly use my laptop for college work, AI projects, basic browsing, and some occasional video and photo editing. I'd love to hear your thoughts and advice on whether Arch Linux is a good fit for me, or if there might be better options out there!

Arch can be rewarding once you get the hang of it, but it's definitely not for beginners. You could end up frustrated if you're not already familiar with Linux guts. I suggest distributions like Fedora or Ubuntu-based ones like Linux Mint that are easier to manage as a new user.

Yeah, Mint is definitely a good shout! It has a lot of Windows-like features that make the transition smoother.

I agree with others; starting with Arch might not be your best bet. Maybe install it in a VM first just to test the waters—if you break something, it’s no big deal. A dual-boot setup isn't the easiest with Arch either, so take that into account!

Consider trying something less complex if you have deadlines and want stability. Mint or Debian could be better for you—they're reliable! Plus, those options come with lots of pre-installed software that makes things easier than Arch.

You might want to rethink using Arch as your first Linux distro. It's pretty technical and requires a solid understanding of the system, plus the Arch Wiki is extensive. If you're dead set on Arch, check out Cachy as it's Arch-based but has a user-friendly installer! Still, double-check if your games run on Linux through ProtonDB before making the switch.
