I'm in a bit of a bind because my phone is basically dying, and I needed to back up a ton of files quickly. I downloaded FileZilla and set up an FTP server using my Xiaomi file manager to transfer files from my phone to my PC over my home Wi-Fi. I created a username and password, and after about 30 minutes of transferring, I got worried about security and read that FTP is not safe and that FileZilla isn't all that trustworthy either. I immediately closed the server on both my phone and PC. Should I be worried about this?

Remember, FTP transfers everything in plain text, so anyone on the network can capture usernames, passwords, and file contents. If you're going to use it, restrict access to just your local network. FileZilla is quite popular, but be aware it has had adware bundled with it before. Consider trying WinSCP instead.
Everything you read is spot on. FTP is indeed very insecure. It's okay for non-sensitive files if you're okay with exposing your credentials. If you keep it off the internet and only on your home network, the risks decrease a lot, but generally, it’s one of the least secure methods you can use for transferring files.
Since I used it only on my home Wi-Fi, that should limit the risks, right? But I definitely won't use it again.
If you’re feeling uneasy about it, it’s best to just stop using it. You can always opt for cloud services like Google Drive or OneDrive for file transfers, or just stick to a USB cable. Way less hassle and more secure!
Sounds good! I’ll switch to using a better service or just connect my phone with the USB. Much simpler!
It's true that FTP opens up a port that can be vulnerable to attacks, but honestly, if you’re not a frequent target, you don't need to worry too much. Just be cautious with any sensitive information. Also, I don't know much about FileZilla's reputation, but it's worth checking out other options too.
You're right, FTP isn't secure since it sends data without encryption. But if you were just on your personal home Wi-Fi, I wouldn't stress too much. The biggest risk would be someone sniffing the data and catching your file names and login info, but honestly, it's rare for someone to even try. Just avoid transferring super confidential stuff. Also, consider using SFTP instead, since it's encrypted and way safer!
Yeah, I did see that it warned about safety before I started, but I was just in a rush. I guess I should've read it more carefully.
So, using it on LAN just means my home Wi-Fi, right? And everything's safe once I close the FTP server?
