Hey folks! I'm 30 years old and have been considering diving into AWS with the hope of landing a job by 2026. I went to IT school in my 20s, so I have some tech background, but I haven't worked hands-on in a while since I've been focused on other things. Just wanted to get your thoughts—am I too late to start this journey? Also, if you could recommend some beginner-friendly courses, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I agree with that! Starting in DevOps typically requires some foundational experience. Even with certifications, what matters more is what you’ve done practically. Try to familiarize yourself with source control and do some personal projects where you can practice automation and pipelines. Making mistakes will help you learn, and the more you document your journey, the better prepared you’ll be when you're ready to make the jump.

It's definitely not too late for you! There's plenty of time to learn and switch careers, but keep in mind that companies often want experience alongside certifications. It’s a bit of a catch-22—need experience to get hired, but need to be hired to get experience. When I was looking to transition into DevOps from backend, I was honest with my boss about wanting to move into DevOps. I got lucky and found opportunities within my company to start using those skills while still working in my old role. So start learning AWS, and also look for ways to apply it in your current or future jobs!

I started my DevOps career at 38! Focus on building pipelines for your personal projects as much as possible. Try to set up a workflow where a simple push to Git leads to a deploy without extra steps. Using GitHub or GitLab combined with tools like Terraform to deploy to AWS can help you a lot. Remember to also think about what’s worth automating—it's often more efficient to automate something to 90% rather than striving for perfection right away. Don't forget to showcase your projects on your resume and LinkedIn!
