Is It Worth Replacing a Fried GPU or Should I Just Wait for a New Build?

My GPU is struggling, really loud, and running super hot at 90°C. A tech mentioned it might be low on liquid—looks like the pump may have failed. Everything else in my PC is in great shape. Here are my specs: Tuf Gaming B550-plus MoBo, EVGA 750W power supply, 32GB of Corsair RAM, an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, and an EVGA SC2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB. My partner and I have almost identical setups but aren't ready to build new PCs just yet. I'm looking for a GPU compatible with my rig that's budget-friendly, so I can delay our new builds. Any suggestions?

There are plenty of GPUs that should work well with your setup! Since your CPU is still solid, consider looking at options like a used 2080 or a 3070—they're often cheaper on places like Facebook Marketplace or eBay. If you're going for a budget-friendly route, the AMD 6650 XT might be a good match too, usually around $150-$180 if found locally.

Thanks for the tips! I want something similar or a bit better than what I currently have. I’m not looking to go too wild since I’ll be doing a full upgrade within a year. That being said, if the next step up isn't too much, I might be interested.

Definitely, just tell us straight up what your budget looks like, and we can find the best option for you. It really makes a difference once we know how much you’re willing to spend!

Right now, my budget is a bit open, but I want to keep it practical. I don’t want to invest in something unnecessary since I plan for a complete overhaul soon.

It sounds like your GPU was liquid cooled. Before making any decisions, what's your budget? Also, where are you located? If you have a Micro Center nearby, that could be a good spot to find deals!

Yeah, it's a hybrid cooling system. I'm on the East Coast and can head to a Micro Center. My budget is kind of flexible, but I don't want to spend too much since I plan to upgrade soon.

What games are you playing and at what resolution? The AMD 6650 XT would be comparable to your 1080 Ti, and I've seen it locally for about $150-180. A used 2080 Ti is around $200 or less too. Your CPU is good enough that you could go for a stronger GPU now and carry it over to your new build later!

Ha, I mostly play funny stuff like 'Hello Kitty Island Adventure,' just kidding! I’m into games like Enshrouded, Minecraft, and Overwatch 2. I just got a 144Hz monitor but haven't set it up yet. I’m worried about getting a GPU that might not work when I eventually upgrade the rest of my build.

You mentioned having a GTX 1080 Ti, correct? You’ve got a 750W power supply, so your options are pretty good. Think about GPUs like the 6800 XT or 6700, depending on the kind of gaming you want to do once prices stabilize. Just keep in mind what you’ve got—every upgrade now needs to be compatible with whatever you’re planning in the future!

Yes, the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 11GB. Thanks for your suggestions; they’re really helpful!
