Is Linux Mint Cinnamon a Good Choice for Switching from Windows?

I'm really not a fan of Windows 11 and I'm planning to switch to Linux on both my laptop and desktop. I purchased my laptop in August, and since it came with Windows 11 and I don't use it much, I thought I'd try changing the OS on it first. My desktop is older and struggles to run more than a few applications at the same time. It also can't upgrade to Windows 11 anyway, but its Windows 10 support goes till next October.

I initially decided on Mint Cinnamon for its reputation as a beginner-friendly option and because I've read that it makes for a smoother transition from Windows. However, as I dive deeper into this switch, I keep seeing discussions about Ubuntu and Arch, and I'm starting to have doubts. Just to be clear, I'm not looking for other distributions to consider — I've seen enough recommendations and just want to know if Mint, Ubuntu, or Arch is the better fit for someone like me, who's used Windows 10 and has fond memories of 7.

My desktop is where I do most of my daily tasks, which include light gaming, schoolwork, music, browsing, and some art projects. I've verified that the games I really want to play should work fine with little hassle, so that's not a big concern for me. Any insights would be really appreciated, thanks!

As someone who's been using Mint for a while, I can say it’s a fantastic option, especially for older hardware. But, if you're looking for a smoother, faster experience, just keep in mind that some newer distros might handle high-performance tasks better. Still, for everyday use, Mint should serve you well.

I totally get your concerns. There's a lot of chatter about the best distro, and at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference. Stick with Mint Cinnamon; it's user-friendly and makes for a smoother transition. Just remember to back up your data before switching!

Totally! Mint Cinnamon is one of the easiest options out there, especially for beginners. If you're transitioning from Windows, it's a solid choice. Sure, Ubuntu with KDE or GNOME is decent too, but Mint keeps it simple. You might want to steer clear of Arch since it’s better suited for those who are a bit tech-savvy. By the way, I'm a Mint user myself!

Mint is definitely the easiest way to switch from Windows! If you’re wary of messing around too much with Linux, it’s a perfect fit. I tried it myself before moving on to Debian, but Mint gets the job done without fuss.

I’ve actually found Mint to be a bit overrated in terms of being the easiest transition. While it’s nice for some, I personally struggled with its Cinnamon desktop. If you don't jive with Cinnamon, maybe check out Zorin for its simple customization. But definitely, if you like Mint, go for it! Just don't hesitate to explore a bit.
