Is Making $10K a Month as a Junior Remote Developer Realistic?

Hey folks! I'm 20 and currently wrapping up my Computer Science degree next year, but I'm feeling a bit uncertain about my direction. I have a basic grasp of front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, React, and JavaScript, as well as some knowledge of programming languages such as C, Java, and Python. However, I haven't delved into full stack development or data structures and algorithms (DSA) yet.

Here's the thing: I have this big goal of earning $10K a month working remotely so I can have the flexibility to live life on my terms. But honestly, I'm starting to wonder if this is a realistic dream or if I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

If I commit serious effort over the next year, is it feasible to reach that salary? Also, I'm curious if focusing on full stack development (MERN) with Python for DSA is the best path, or if I should consider other fields like cybersecurity, cloud computing, or AI/ML instead. I'd really appreciate insights from anyone already in the industry or fellow learners!

- Is this goal achievable, or am I just dreaming?
- How would you approach starting out in my position?
- Any advice you wish you'd received when beginning your career?

The current job market is tough. Even here in the UK, landing a decent tech job is becoming increasingly difficult. A salary that high straight out of college seems unlikely, but with hard work, you might hit that mark eventually.

Thanks for the insight! It’s good to hear honest takes instead of just negativity.

That number sounds a bit delusional for a newcomer, to be honest. But if you build your skills and network over time, that kind of income is definitely possible. Just manage your expectations for now.

Yeah, I figured it was a stretch. Just want to plan early!

While there are certainly people making that much as remote developers, they usually have several years of experience. You're still quite young and have time to grow your skill set. Focus on what you love in tech rather than just chasing the money.

I appreciate that perspective! I want to find a balance between passion and salary.

I think it’s unrealistic for a junior developer. Most companies aren't going to hire new grads remotely for that salary. If you're serious about aiming for that later, you might need to spend several years building up your skills and experience first.

Thanks for keeping it real. I want to understand the long-term path.

Honestly, aiming for $10k a month right out of the gate is super ambitious, especially as a new grad just starting in this highly competitive field. Most new developers, even in big cities or tech hubs, typically don't see that kind of salary until they have several years of experience under their belts. Consider that remote jobs paying that much are even more coveted.

I get that! I’m not expecting it overnight; just want to know how to plan for the future.
