I'm currently using the DisplayPort 1.2 cable that came with my 3840x1600p monitor, but I just got a new RTX 5080 video card that supports DisplayPort 2.1b. My monitor still runs at 144Hz without any issues, but I'm curious if my 1.2 cable is sufficient or if I should invest in a new one. Am I missing out on any extra features or bandwidth by sticking with the older cable?

It's similar to HDMI in that older versions are usually backwards compatible. Since your monitor worked with DisplayPort 1.2, it will still work with the RTX 5080. Keep using your current cable as long as you’re happy with the performance. Just know that when you do upgrade your monitor, you can take advantage of the newer cable features.
One major difference between DisplayPort versions is the improved support for HDR and higher resolutions. While your current cable works fine, moving to a newer version like DisplayPort 2.0 provides better color accuracy and supports resolutions up to 8K, which can enhance your experience if you plan to upgrade your monitor in the future.
I would suggest getting a new cable, just to stay future-proof. But avoid places like Best Buy; they usually overcharge for cables. There are plenty of alternatives online that are more reasonably priced.
If you're not running anything above 4K, you probably won't notice a difference with your current setup. I have multiple 4K monitors and I've stuck with the cables that came with them, and they've been just fine for what I need. Your cable is designed to support your monitor as it stands.
But why replace it? The cables that come with monitors are generally good enough. Since your monitor is still functioning well, I think you're fine sticking with your current one.
