I've been building PCs for several years now, and I'm about to put together my fourth one. I purchased a case, motherboard, power supply unit (PSU), and RAM three to four years ago and recently just bought a new CPU and GPU. The initial parts have been in the case all this time, but I live in a Victorian house in the north of the UK, which doesn't have the best airflow. There's a tiny bit of rust and oxidation on the top of the case due to humidity, but upon checking, the motherboard looks okay with minimal dust. I'm planning to fit the new components tomorrow, and aside from getting a can of compressed air and a new CMOS battery, is there anything else I should worry about?

As long as the pins on the connectors look good, your motherboard should be just fine after a good dusting. You might not even need to replace the CMOS battery!
You should be just fine! I've bought old hardware before without any issues. Even the CMOS on a four-year-old board worked perfectly fine. Keeping it in the case instead of the box shouldn't cause any extra problems.
Honestly, I wouldn't stress about it. My old rig has some rust on the case from living near the water, but the motherboard and all the internals are still running great. Just do a quick inspection and you're good to go!
You have nothing to worry about! I've left my case open for years and still had everything run smoothly. Just check for any major damage before you start, but generally, parts hold up really well. No reason to be overly concerned.
