Is My Router Compromised or Is It My Wife’s Computer?

So, my wife just told me that Safari is giving her warnings about visiting insecure websites, and it seems to happen with every site she tries to access. I told her to restart our AT&T Uverse modem/router, and now the sites load, but they're missing the 'https' in their URLs. I'm starting to wonder if our router has been compromised. If that's the case, will a factory reset fix it? Thanks for any insights!

Honestly, it's more likely that the problem lies with her computer rather than the modem itself. I suggest running a full virus and malware scan to rule out any issues there.

Yeah, I'd second that. The router typically doesn't alter URLs; it's just routing traffic. Checking her computer’s security settings would be smart.

I’d recommend trying a different web browser like Chrome to see if the problem persists. Sometimes the browser settings could be causing the HTTPS warnings.

If all websites are showing as 'http' instead of 'https', I’d try unplugging the modem/router for about 10-15 minutes. Sometimes that forces the ISP to assign a new IP address, which might help. Just keep in mind that if your ISP has a lease time for IPs, it may not always work, so waiting it out could be necessary.

Good point! I remember my ISP keeping the same IP for ages. Definitely worth a try, but if issues persist, calling your ISP is a good call.

It might be a good idea to check whether the date and time on her device are accurate. Sometimes that can cause issues with secure connections.

If several devices aren't getting secure connections, it’s definitely worth checking if your router has been compromised. Factory resetting the router might help, but be cautious if malware has potentially corrupted the firmware. After resetting, consider updating your firmware, but make sure to get it from a safe source. If handling this is too technical for you, contact your ISP. They should help ensure your router's security and might even have info on any vulnerabilities.
