I'm new to using Astro but I found their guide on integrating it with PayloadCMS. I'm exploring options for a stack that will be scalable and reusable for potential clients. They would likely prefer to manage the website with their own team of editors or a marketing department. My experience with PayloadCMS has been great, and I'm keen to be part of its ecosystem as an alternative to the more traditional, bulky systems.
While I know Payload is labeled as a "headless" CMS, it feels a bit more tied to Next.js and React. I would be interested in something more like Sanity, but not quite as elaborate. My plan is to create a configurable theme for Astro that works with Payload, along with a set of customizable Blocks. Is that something feasible or am I missing something important?

Have you considered using Kirby CMS? I've been working with it for around three years and built my entire agency around it. It's a file-based CMS in PHP, perfect for creating regular content sites and even micro-SaaS. Plus, I have a demo for e-commerce too!
You could always go the WordPress route, but honestly, I'd rather become a goat farmer in Antarctica than use that.
What about Keystatic? It's designed specifically for use with Astro and could be a good match for your needs.
I've been using Astro for quite some time and it's fantastic! It's great because you can use virtually any front-end framework, and it's static by default, making it super manageable. It really checks all the boxes for me.
