Looking for Advice on Upgrading My 9-Year-Old PC

Hey everyone! I've had my PC since my 11th birthday, and now that I'm 20, it's about 9 years old. It's surprisingly held up well, considering I've only done basic maintenance like dusting and a PSU replacement. I'm trying to upgrade my setup so I can play modern games comfortably at high settings.

Here's what I currently have:
- CPU: Intel Core i7 6700
- Motherboard: MSI Z170A Krait Gaming
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
- RAM: 16GB DDR4 2400 C15
- Storage: 250GB Samsung SSD and 2TB Toshiba HDD

I'm thinking about building a whole new PC, but my budget is around $800-1000 AUD, so I'd like to upgrade key components instead—specifically the CPU, motherboard, and maybe the GPU if I can find a good deal. I've been eyeing the Ryzen 5 5600X—will that run modern games on medium to high settings? Also, do I need to upgrade the GPU to go along with it?

I have an i5 6600K and I can play most modern games at medium-high settings without issues. I even game at 1440p with decent FPS. So upgrading to the Ryzen 5 5600X should definitely help! Just make sure to check your GPU’s performance too—if it’s really holding you back, consider upgrading that as well.

I did a similar upgrade a couple of years back, moving from a 6700K to a 13700K and replacing my RAM to 32GB DDR5. Bundling the CPU, RAM, and motherboard from a retailer can save hassle as they’ll be guaranteed compatible. You might see significant performance gains from such an upgrade!

About a year ago, I upped my i7 8700K with a used RTX 3070 and went for 32GB of RAM. It worked great—no CPU bottlenecks, and I managed medium to high settings at 1440p. It might be worth going for 32GB of RAM for improved performance, especially for gaming.

Honestly, you might want to consider a whole new build for a smooth upgrade path. Going for an AM5 setup with a B650/B850 motherboard and a Ryzen 7600X would be a smart move. You can hold onto your case and PSU to save on costs for now.
