Looking for Simple Hosting Solution for Student Subdomains

I teach web design basics (HTML/CSS) to undergraduates and I'm searching for a better method for hosting their projects. Previously, students used free subdomains on AwardSpace, but we faced challenges with security and the clunky interface. Now, I'm looking to host a dedicated site where students can work on their simple websites with subdomains. I have a domain but need hosting, and I'm unsure how to set up student accounts and manage their subdomain directories for file uploads. It should be straightforward since they don't need anything complex like email. I'm hoping for suggestions on how to organize this effectively!

GitHub is a fantastic option! It allows for free static site hosting, and it's a great way to introduce your students to version control while they build their sites. You could set up a main website that links to each student’s project seamlessly. No need to buy domains, and everyone has total control over their work.

I recommend using GitHub Pages. Your students can host their sites for free and also get the added benefit of learning version control, which is super useful. Setting up wildcard DNS takes just a few minutes, and they'll be able to push their changes easily instead of using FTP, which is another great skill to have.

I host my projects on GitHub Pages as well. It's quite simple; I just add new HTML pages under my main domain like domainname.org/biology/. But you'll need to figure out if your students can add their own pages. Maybe setting permissions for them might work!
