I'm looking to upgrade my PC that my friend built for me almost a decade ago. I've managed some minor upgrades over the years, like adding an SSD and more RAM, but it's definitely time for a bigger refresh. I generally play lighter games like Minecraft, Risk of Rain 2, and Deep Rock Galactic, and occasionally some FPS titles. I'm hoping to keep my total spending around $500-600, but I'm flexible since prices can be crazy right now.
I have three main components in mind for upgrading:
1. **CPU**: I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 1600, which is quite outdated and doesn't support Windows 11. I've been looking at options like the 7500f or 9600X, but I'm unsure if my current Gigabyte B450M motherboard will accommodate those.
2. **Case**: My current case is a MasterBox Q300L, which is just okay. I'm open to a new case that prioritizes function without being too ugly, though this isn't my top priority.
3. **Monitor**: I'm using an old HP EliteDisplay E201 and an even older Acer v193w. If I get a new main monitor, I'd like it to be 1440p, but I need to know if my EVGA GTX 1660 will handle that at 120Hz.
Thanks for any input!

It looks like you're working with some pretty dated parts. Honestly, you might want to consider replacing not just the CPU, but also the GPU and possibly the power supply. Your motherboard might not support the newer CPUs you're eyeing, so that's something to keep in mind.
If you’re looking to save some cash, you could sell your current setup for around $200-300, then put that towards a better used system instead. Just something to think about!
I'd recommend at least the 5600X for your CPU and the 3060 or RX6600XT for the GPU to really give your setup a lift. Just keep an eye on your power supply; you might need an upgrade depending on its quality.
For your upgrade, you could go with a Thermaltake Tough Power 850W power supply for around $84, a Ryzen 5800XT for about $200, and a 5060 GPU with 8GB for around $250. That brings you to $534 total, which fits your budget and should all be compatible with your AM4 motherboard and case!
If you want to keep your current GPU, you could skip that cost and maybe invest in a good 27" 1440p monitor instead, which should be available for around $150.
Make sure to update the BIOS on your motherboard to the latest version! This upgrade will allow you to support the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. The Ryzen 5600 or 5700X would be great options. Also, consider upgrading to an RX 6900 XT for your GPU; it'll pair well with a 1440p monitor. As for RAM, 16GB should suffice, but 32GB would be ideal if your budget allows. You might want to think about a 650W Bronze PSU as well, just to be safe.

Yeah, that makes sense. I wanted to avoid a complete build because of the market prices, but I guess most of my hardware is pretty old. I’ll take a look at resale values and see what makes the most sense.
