I recently picked up a second-hand PC for about 300 euros, and I'm looking for some advice on upgrades. Here are the specs:
- CPU: i7-10700
- GPU: RTX2060 Super
- RAM: 32GB (no brand specified)
- SSD: 480GB (LC-Power Phoenix)
- Cooler: Argus SU-800
- PSU: Inter-Tech Energon 650W
- Motherboard: H410m-HVS
- Case: Inter-Tech S3906 Renegade with 1 exhaust fan.
I'm mainly interested in gaming and using Microsoft Word, but I'm experiencing heating issues while playing Fortnite. The CPU temperature hits around 85 degrees, and the game stutters despite the CPU only using 50% power. Without the case sides, the temp drops to 75 degrees, but it still stutters.
Here are my thoughts on potential upgrades and my questions:
1. Should I replace the PSU? I found a Pure Power 12M 650W for 100 euros, but I'm worried if it's worth it.
2. Should I upgrade to a better cooler? A Phantom Spirit 120SE is available for 38 euros.
3. I plan to add two more exhaust fans since the current setup isn't enough. A TL-C12C-S 5-pack costs 18 euros.
4. I want to replace the SSD with a 1TB 870 Evo since the current one runs out of space quickly. It's priced at 100 euros.
5. I also need to add an Arctic Fan PWM Hub for 8 euros, as my motherboard only has one header.
6. Plus, there's 20 euros for shipping.
In total, that's around 276 euros. Are these upgrades necessary to make the PC functional, or should I reconsider some options? I also have to remove the CPU, which adds extra time and potential costs if I need to pay a shop for that.

Before you jump into more expenses, try the new cooler and fans. The old PSU should be fine since your build’s power consumption is pretty low, especially if it’s held up for five years already. If the stuttering persists, it could also be due to your motherboard’s VRM overheating, so additional airflow could help. As for the SSD, SATA drives typically max out read/write easily, but a 1TB SATA SSD might be overkill compared to getting a 2TB NVMe SSD for the same price in other setups. Just keep in mind – don't overspend on this build if it’s not what you need long-term!
A decent cooler typically costs between 20-40 euros. Spending 100 euros on a new PSU seems like a bit much, considering you scored the whole PC for 300. Have you thought about getting a better airflow case instead? It could make a big difference in cooling performance.
For sure! Cases can get pricey, but if yours works fine for now, sticking with the cooler upgrade first seems smart.
It sounds like you might have a prebuilt rig there, especially with the case and PSU brand being the same. I don’t think you necessarily need to upgrade the PSU right now. Definitely prioritize getting a new cooler and adding more fans – that should help with the overheating issues. Keep an eye on the temps after those upgrades before making any more changes.
Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Those cooler and fan additions are definitely the most important to tackle first.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll tackle those cooling upgrades first, since they seem to be the biggest issue. I didn’t realize the motherboard could affect performance so much. And regarding NVMe, my current motherboard doesn’t support it, but I’ve heard of people using adapters. Might not be worth the hassle, though.
