Need Help Understanding Domain Renewal and Management

Hey everyone! I'm in need of some guidance. I have a domain with Squarespace that's up for renewal, and I've honestly not thought much about domains since I switched to Google Domains back in 2022. The domain has a .net extension and they're charging me $15 for renewal. Is this a reasonable rate?

Additionally, I'm feeling lost about how to compare domain prices because they often seem hidden. I don't mind a slight difference in price, but I want to explore my options.

On another note, I was also trying to check the price for transferring my domain to Cloudflare and somehow ended up creating an 'invalid nameservers' situation in my account. Should I just delete that entry, or could that cause any complications?

I really appreciate any help I can get!

When you tell Cloudflare to manage your domain, they need specific nameserver records from the registrar. Each registrar sets their nameservers, so if you purchased a domain with Cloudflare, you’d need to point it to the right records. I'm a fan of using Porkbun as a registrar because they have excellent service.

$15 for a .net renewal is quite common. You might be paying a bit of a premium with Squarespace, but it’s still reasonable. As for that Cloudflare issue, it sounds like you might have started the setup for DNS management through them. It’s easy to fix if that’s not what you wanted. I use Cloudflare for DNS and find it reliable! You could give it a shot, or stick to Namecheap for registrations since they are solid.

Typically, a renewal fee of $10-15 per year is pretty standard for a .net domain. Squarespace may have a slightly higher rate, but that number isn’t too outlandish. Regarding shopping around, sites like Namecheap or GoDaddy can give you clear pricing, so it might be worth checking them out. Just a heads-up, avoid using GoDaddy if you can, as their support isn’t the best.

Squarespace claimed they matched the prices from Google Domains, right? If you're dealing with Cloudflare, keep in mind that they can be tricky to manage compared to some others. If your transfer didn’t go through, feel free to delete it from your Cloudflare listing without any worries.

I was actually paying $12 with Google Domains, and Squarespace charged me the same for the first year, but now it’s $3 more. Thanks for clarifying!
