I'm in need of some good speakers to use with my new monitor that doesn't have built-in sound. My main use will be streaming TV shows and watching YouTube videos. I typically don't listen to music much. I'd like to keep my budget under $300, and I'm open to spending up to $400 if I decide to include a subwoofer. I have a large desk, so space isn't a huge constraint. Also, is it worth getting a subwoofer for my intended use? I've heard of brands like Edifier, Kanto, and Polk in my search, but I'm looking for specific suggestions.

For your desk setup, I highly recommend the Edifier 1280T speakers. They sound great for TV shows and YouTube. Honestly, you really only need a subwoofer if you're into music or watching movies in larger spaces. Stick with these for a solid sound experience!
Edifier speakers are always a great choice! They give you good quality sound without breaking the bank.
I use the AudioEngine A2+ and love them! They have a compact size that fits well on a desk. With your budget, you could explore bigger models, but the A2+ works well for my needs. They should suit you just fine, especially if space is a consideration.
Check out the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. I've had mine for 20 years and they're still going strong! Just make sure you're okay with the potential noise if you're in an apartment.
I think subwoofers can be fantastic, but if you're in an apartment, they might be a bit tricky to get the full effect without disturbing neighbors. If you do choose to get one, look for a model with volume control specifically for the sub so you can adjust as needed. The Harman Kardon Soundsticks Wireless 4 are cool looking and provide good sound without being too overwhelming.

Thanks for the rec! I decided to go with the A2+ since they fit perfectly under my monitor!
