Should I Buy a Secondhand Hard Drive for Storing Photos and Videos?

I'm not very familiar with hard drives, but I'm looking for a large storage solution for my pictures and videos. USB sticks seem too small for my needs, and a friend suggested that I consider an HDD since they're much cheaper secondhand. Are used HDDs worth it? What should I be cautious about to avoid getting ripped off? I've also heard that older drives can lose data, so is investing in a new one the better option?

Even though old HDDs might still work, they do have a higher risk of failing. Always keep a backup somewhere safe—ideally offsite or in the cloud—just in case something happens to your drive. A cloud service can keep your stuff safe without the stress of hardware wearing out.

In my experience, I wouldn’t recommend getting a used HDD unless you’re fine with the chance of it failing. You can never know the drive's history. If you have your files backed up, it's less of a risk, but honestly, a brand new HDD isn't that expensive and could save you from headaches later on.

I've bought quite a few used drives and most have worked fine. I usually check their SMART stats to judge their condition. If they look good, I take the risk. However, if your photos and videos mean a lot to you, I’d suggest going for new drives or at least having backups in multiple places.

It's risky to buy a used hard drive, especially if your data is important to you. If you lose your data, can you recover it? If backups aren't an option for you, I'd be cautious about secondhand drives. But if you're okay with taking the gamble, then go for it. Just remember, having backups is key!

I've purchased several used HDDs from reputable brands like Western Digital and had good luck with them, provided there's a return policy in case something goes wrong. Just make sure it's a quality brand and keep in mind that having multiple copies of your data is essential. Using a cloud backup is a smart move.
