Should I Upgrade My CPU for Windows 11?

I've been thinking about upgrading my CPU just so I can run Windows 11, especially since Windows 10 will lose support in fall 2025. Currently, I have a Ryzen 1700X and I'm considering moving up to a Ryzen 5700X. The good news is that they're compatible with my motherboard and it's currently on sale for 200 CAD. I'm satisfied with my computer's performance and don't see that changing anytime soon. What do you all think? Am I worrying too much about the potential security risks of sticking with an unsupported Windows 10?

I had my local PC technician work on my BIOS to upgrade to Windows 11, and it went smoothly. There are definitely guides online about it, too!

If you're feeling adventurous, consider trying Linux! You can run distributions like Mint with Cinnamon; it’s user-friendly and often better for older hardware. That way you can keep saving for a newer PC that supports Windows 11.

I’ve mostly used Windows as well, so I'm a bit nervous about switching! I'll look into it, though. Thanks!

You might want to consider getting a used Ryzen 3600 instead; it's often cheaper!

Sounds like a solid idea! Do you know any good places to find used CPUs?

Just a heads up, I've got a 3600 and Windows hasn't given me the option to upgrade to 11.

You could also install Windows 10 IoT LTSC, which is supported until 2032. It’s meant for devices like ATMs and is very lightweight; you can add the app store through PowerShell if you want it to feel more like regular Windows.

If you're set on upgrading, the 5700X is a fantastic choice! You'll definitely feel a performance boost compared to your 1700X.

Consider if upgrading to Windows 11 is actually worth it for you. There are alternatives; for instance, Windows 10 IoT LTSC can keep you covered for a long time. If you want performance, then yes, upgrading your CPU is a smart move. Just remember to update your BIOS after any upgrade to avoid compatibility issues!

Thanks for the advice! I feel like I've got some time, which is good to know.

The 3D version of the 5700X is pretty pricey, around 400 CAD, so maybe I'll wait for a better deal. Thanks for the heads up about the BIOS!
