I'm new to building and upgrading computers, and I'm trying to figure out my options. My current setup runs fine for most tasks, but when it comes to newer games, I have to set the graphics to the lowest levels, and sometimes it's still choppy. I've noticed in the task manager that the CPU seems to be the main bottleneck. I worry that my motherboard is outdated and may limit my CPU upgrade options. Should I go ahead and upgrade just the CPU for now, or would it be better to save up for a new motherboard and a more complete build instead? Here's a link to my current build for reference: [PC Build](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nzqrgn).

Honestly, upgrading the CPU on an old socket isn't usually worth it, unless you're starting with a really weak CPU. If it's not super outdated, you might be able to squeeze a bit more life out of it, but it's pretty limiting overall.
You might want to check your motherboard's manual or do a quick search online to see what CPUs are compatible. From what I found, it looks like you might max out with something like an i5-8400. If that’s the case, it's probably better to save for a new build since technology has moved on a lot since your motherboard was made.
I’d say hold off and save for a whole new PC instead. Upgrading individual parts on an older setup can just be a stopgap. You might want to think about upgrading to an SSD too; a 2TB SSD is pretty affordable these days, and it’ll give you a nice performance boost while you save. But yeah, your case might struggle with higher-end parts due to cooling issues, so a full rebuild might be best down the road.
Thanks, yeah, it's been good over the years! I’ve only upgraded the RAM and storage, but maybe it’s time for a complete overhaul.
A CPU like the 7700 could help a bit since it doubles your threads, but honestly, it might just be time to consider building a new rig. Your current PC has served you well over 6 years, but we’ve come a long way since then!
That’s the issue I have too! I really have no idea what’s a good CPU for my setup, and sorting through specs is confusing.
