Should I Upgrade My GTX 1080 to a 9060 XT, 9070 XT, or 5070 Ti Now, or Wait?

I'm currently using a GTX 1080 and I'm looking to upgrade this Black Friday. I'm not planning a complete system overhaul yet, so I want to avoid getting a GPU that would be too powerful for my setup. My current rig includes a Ryzen 5 5600X, 32GB of RAM, and the GTX 1080. I intend to upgrade the entire rig in about 3-4 years. Right now, I use a 1080p 27" 240Hz monitor but I'm considering switching to a 1440p OLED soon.

The GPUs I'm considering are:

* RX 9060 XT priced around $580 AUD (~$380 USD)
* RX 9070 XT roughly $900 AUD (~$590 USD)
* RTX 5070 also around $900 AUD (~$590 USD)
* RTX 5070 Ti about $1300 AUD (~$850 USD)

I'd like advice on whether it's better to save money and go for the 9060 XT or invest in the 9070 XT, 5070, or 5070 Ti (note: I'd need a new PSU for two of those as my current one is only 550 watts). I primarily play Valorant and CS:GO competitively but want to handle current AAA games like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Cyberpunk, and hopefully GTA 6 at 1440p.

I recommend the 9070 XT. It pairs well with your CPU at 1440p and shouldn't cause much bottlenecking. It’s worth it for the performance boost.

Absolutely, I'm pretty set on that option now!

Always aim for the best option you can afford, especially with a PSU upgrade in the mix. Don't hold back if it’ll enhance your experience.

If you're gaming at 1440p, the 9070 XT or 5070 Ti will definitely give you a noticeable boost in AAA titles. With your 5600X, you might not get the most out of them, but that's alright. As for the pricing, I’d skip the 5070 since it’s similarly priced to the 9070 XT. Regarding CPU bottlenecking in CS:GO and Valorant, you will likely face some limitations even with the 9060 XT at competitive settings, but it’s still solid for your current needs.

Thanks for your advice! I think I’ll go for the 9070 XT plus a new PSU for an extra $300.

My 5700X3D doesn’t bottleneck a 4080 at 1440p, so I’d suggest getting the 9070 XT along with the new PSU. It should serve you well until the next AM upgrade, that’s my plan too!

Exactly what I was thinking—go for the 9070 XT and stick with it for a while!

Check out that CPU scaling video by Hardware Canucks for some clarity on this. In short, the 5600X won't bottleneck the 9060 XT and it should be a good pairing. With something like the 9070 XT, there might be minor FPS drops in a few games, but it’s still reasonable to use together.
