I'm in a bit of a pickle with my gaming setup and need some advice. I currently have an i7 9700 processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM running at 2666 MHz, and a 6700XT graphics card. My wife is using my old PC, which has an i7 3770K, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and a GTX 970. I was gifted a 4070 GPU that I plan to install in my build, while she might end up with the 6700XT, albeit with some potential bottlenecks.
I have a budget of around 1000 euros to upgrade our gaming experience. Since I primarily play at 1080p and can reach 240Hz on my monitor, though I rarely hit those high fps, I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to something like an Intel i7-14700K or if I should focus on better components for 1080p gaming without overspending.
I'm also torn between building a new system from scratch or updating my current one. I really dislike the idea of buying a pre-built system since I already have a GPU.
So, what's the best approach to optimize both of our setups within my budget? I've seen some build suggestions but I'm having a hard time deciding what direction to take. Thanks for your help!

If you're mostly gaming at 1080p, you might not see significant gains from just upgrading your CPU to the i7-14700K. Instead, I suggest considering a Ryzen 5 or 7 with 32GB of RAM, which would work beautifully at that resolution. You could pass your current PC to your wife (upgrading her RAM to 16GB is a good idea) and invest in that Ryzen setup for yourself. Check out this build for a good starting point: [link to PCPartPicker].
I recommend passing your setup to your wife, like others have suggested, and building a new PC with the used parts market in mind. Search for a decent Ryzen motherboard that supports your new GPU too. And if you have any leftover budget, maybe look into upgrading your monitor, since 1080p might not cut it if you’re considering larger screens down the line.
