Thinking About a Switch to IT – Is It Worth It?

Hey everyone, I'm a 37-year-old guy working in the food industry in New York. I've been working seven days a week, and while I enjoy my job, I've been considering making a move into the IT sector, specifically programming. The catch is, I have zero experience or prior knowledge in this area. Do you think it's a good idea to start learning at home to see if I like it? What's the job market like for someone like me?

It might be better to consider picking up a trade instead. The job market for IT isn't great right now, and there are tons of people vying for those programming jobs. If you really want to go for it, definitely start as a hobby first to see how you like it.

I think it’s possible, but it’s tough at the moment with all the AI hype. If you're passionate about it, go for it! Just remember that combining your food industry knowledge with programming could give you an edge in the job market.

If you're new to this, check out New York's ETPL for funded courses and bootcamps. Just keep in mind, landing a job often requires at least a year of experience, so networking is key!

Wow thank you, I hadn't thought about apprenticeships!

Honestly, jumping into programming as a secondary option may not work out well for you unless you're really passionate. It takes grit and a lot of dedication to succeed in this field.
