Thinking About Switching to Linux: Will It Work for Gaming and Art?

I've been hearing about Linux my whole life thanks to my software engineer uncle, but I have zero firsthand experience with it. With Windows becoming increasingly cluttered with ads and subscription models, I'm on the verge of switching. I really dislike MacOS and need a system that can handle gaming and art applications like Blender. If I make the leap to Linux, will my gaming experience or art software be limited? Especially since my PC will still have Windows for backup. Can I easily mod my games, or will I have to jump through hoops for things that are simple on Windows or Mac?

Linux definitely respects your user control more than Windows does. Installing is straightforward and you won’t be bombarded with consent notices like in Windows. For gaming, Steam and Wine are great tools, but some programs, especially Adobe ones, don’t have Linux versions. Look for alternatives or online resources for specific tasks. Expect some mods to be a bit tricky since not all tools are available on Linux either!

Just so you know, some online games may not function or could even ban you for playing on Linux. There are great games that run well, but there's a learning curve. It's like the debate over who's the best hockey team — it can get intense! I'd recommend just diving in and trying it out for yourself.

I suggest looking into dual booting. This way, you can keep Windows for any essential software while exploring Linux on the side. Many games now run well on Linux, especially with Steam's compatibility layer, but just be aware you might face some performance hits with non-native games. Switching to a Linux distribution like Pop OS can be relatively easy if you follow some online guides. I did it as a beginner and had Steam and most of my games up and running in about an hour. Keep in mind there might be some hurdles with certain updates or features, but generally, it could feel less busy than Windows.

Thanks for the tip! I've heard a lot about Pop OS — might give it a shot!

To really figure out how well Linux will work for you, it’s crucial to know which games and programs you rely on. For example, Blender runs great natively, but your other software may have mixed support. Modding can vary — some games allow straightforward modding, while others may require more effort. Check out ProtonDB for whether your Steam games work well on Linux! Overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag depending on what you play and use.

Most of my games are on Steam and I use Nexus for modding, so I'm hoping for the best!
