Tips for Traveling with Networking Equipment

I'm in a bit of a bind and need to take a firewall with me to set up a new office. Usually, I'd just ship it, but the timeline is tight. The box is nearly the size for carry-on. I'm wondering if TSA is likely to freak out if I show up with a prewired firewall packed in a telco tray. Has anyone else traveled with networking gear in their carry-on?

Just to note, if your firewall has batteries, they have size restrictions similar to those for laptops. And by the way, many airports in the US now use facial recognition at TSA. You can opt out if you're uncomfortable, just say 'I decline.'

I've flown frequently with firewalls, switches, hard drives, and even portable satellites in my carry-on. They might swab your gear for testing, but that’s about it—no major issues for me!

If you're flying internationally, watch out for customs. Some countries are picky and won’t let you bring certain equipment in your carry-on, so check the rules before you go.

I fly every week with NUCs and small switches, and I've never had a problem at security. You're usually good to carry on networking equipment!

Just a heads up, when they run your stuff through the x-ray, make sure you get all the pieces back! TSA can be a bit careless, and I once showed up at a data center with a Cisco router but no power supply because they 'lost' it. Also, I had a funny encounter with a TSA agent, but that's another story.

Buffalo TSA can be wild, right? They thought my access point was a mine once! These guys need to chill and stop playing video games in security!

You should be fine, especially with the newer TSA machines. Just keep in mind that if you have multiple stacked cards, they might request additional inspection. I had to take apart some gear once to fit it in carry-on, and they asked what it was. Just tell them it's telecommunications equipment and you should be good to go.

I've carried a firewall and even small tools like screwdrivers and wire cutters without any issues. The only thing I've found that raises eyebrows is protein powder—it gets a lot of attention at security!
