Transitioning to Linux: Key Questions and Insights

I'm looking to switch to Linux soon, but I have a few important questions. First, what are the main differences between rolling release distributions and point release distributions? Are updates automatically applied at boot, or do I have the option to choose when to update? Can I wait for more stable releases instead of getting daily updates?

Second, I've tried Live ISOs of Linux Mint and CachyOS, and I noticed significant version differences in my favorite tools, like Blender and Darktable, between the official distro versions and the Flatpak versions. What's the deal with that? Is it safe to use Flatpaks? What are some common issues users face with them?

Third, when it comes to installing Linux over an existing Windows setup, should I do a clean drive wipe, or is it sufficient to just install Linux without additional cleanup? I've already backed up everything, including some game mods.

Lastly, I'm torn between CachyOS, Bazzite, and PikaOS for my primary distro. What are people's thoughts on these? Has anyone transitioned between them before finding their perfect fit? I apologize if these questions are a bit much; switching operating systems is daunting for me, especially since it's my first time!

With rolling release distros, you generally get the latest updates quickly, but it's up to you when to apply them. Most distros will notify you about available updates, but won't install them automatically. So if you prefer a more stable environment, you can choose when to update without worrying about issues after booting up.

Totally agree! I've had experiences where just waiting a couple of days resolved issues with updates that were initially problematic.

You don't necessarily have to wipe your drives clean when installing Linux over Windows. Just repartitioning the drives during installation is usually sufficient. The installer typically handles this for you. You're all set as long as you've backed up everything important.

Exactly, I just installed over my Windows setup without any issues, so you should be good. Just make sure to double-check your partitions to avoid any surprises!

Choosing a distro is definitely a personal journey. You might not land on the perfect one right away, and that's okay! Many users start with a user-friendly distribution, then explore others as they learn more. Between CachyOS, Bazzite, and PikaOS, I suggest trying them out. You might find that CachyOS fits your needs better due to its up-to-date features, while Bazzite is a solid choice too. Don't pressure yourself to make the perfect choice initially!

I've been switching between them a lot trying to find the right one! Each has its own flavor, and it's all about what works best for you.

When it comes to Flatpaks vs official versions, Flatpaks can be beneficial because they offer newer software, especially on distros that have older versions. They won't damage your CPU, so no worries there! Just keep in mind, they can take up more storage space and sometimes don’t integrate as well with the system's theme, but overall I find them reliable.

Right?! I use Flatpaks for a lot of my applications and they've been working fine for me. The extra storage space is a small price to pay for getting the latest versions!
