Ultra 7 265K vs Ultra 9 285: Which One Should I Choose?

I'm trying to decide between the Ultra 7 265K and the Ultra 9 285 for my workstation, but I need some help figuring out which CPU would be better for my needs. Both machines have pretty much the same specifications, like 64GB of RAM and an A1000 RTX GPU, but the Ultra 7 265K has ECC RAM while the Ultra 9 285 has non-ECC. I don't think I really need ECC, but it might be a nice feature to have. The price difference is about £100, with the Ultra 9 being cheaper. From what I've seen in benchmarks, the 265K generally performs better than the 285, which I didn't expect since the 285 has four more E-cores. It's also confusing because benchmark results for the 285 seem inconsistent. I don't do gaming; my work involves managing 100+ tabs, running spreadsheets, and streaming videos continuously. Any advice or experiences with these CPUs would be appreciated!

The Ultra 9 285 does have more E-cores, which can help with efficiency and performance at lower power, especially in heavy multitasking scenarios. But for your usage, the 265K might be a better choice since it tends to perform more consistently. Also, keep in mind that ECC RAM requires both the CPU and the chipset to support it, and the common Z890 chipset doesn’t, so you might not benefit from ECC at all. If you're not worried about the power consumption and are focused on performance, the 265K likely has the edge. Plus, I’ve heard that the upcoming Ultra 270K will offer even better performance for a similar price!

Yeah, I've been hearing good things about the 270K too. Might be worth waiting if you can!

Honestly, if gaming isn't in your plans, the 265K will be more than sufficient for your productivity needs. If price and value for productivity matter, I'd lean toward the 265K. The 285 is a bit overpriced for its performance unless you're in an environment that strictly needs higher multi-threading capabilities.

Agreed! The 265K does seem more balanced for work tasks compared to the 285.

As a current user of the 265K, I can tell you it’s top-notch for productivity. If you need it now, go for the 265K. But if you can afford to wait, the rumored 270K may provide even better value! It’s designed to handle productivity with ease, especially given your daily tasks.
