I'm looking to install Linux on my old HP Omen 15 laptop, primarily for gaming purposes. It has an Intel i7-7700HQ processor, a GTX 1050 GPU, 38 GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1TB HDD, and a 500GB SSD. I'm hoping to find a distro that's compatible with Steam and runs well on my hardware. Any recommendations?

By the way, 38 GB of RAM is quite impressive! Just kick back and enjoy the performance on whatever distro you choose, especially with your SSD setup.

Check out the distro selection page in the Linux4Noobs wiki for some tailored advice. Just remember to back up your data and consider running things in a VM to play around safely!

For gaming, you might want to look into CachyOS with the KDE desktop. It’s based on Arch Linux and has a bit of a learning curve, but it’s fantastic for Steam gaming since it’s what the Steam Deck runs on. Definitely worth considering!

I’d suggest trying Debian with the XFCE desktop environment. It’s stable, user-friendly, and lightweight—perfect for older hardware. You can use a Live USB to test it out before installing.

Totally agree! XFCE is a solid choice. Plus, you can check out other desktop environments like LXDE or MATE via a Live USB without any commitment.

Your laptop has great specs for gaming! Don’t forget to install the proprietary drivers for your GPU. For distros, consider Pop!, Ubuntu, or Nobara, and install Linux on the SSD for quicker loads.
