I'm trying to figure out which protocol is needed for the new version of Outlook. In the Exchange settings under mailboxes, I noticed that all options for managing settings for email apps are disabled, except for MAPI for the Outlook desktop. Currently, users can only access the classic Outlook, and the new Outlook isn't connecting to the server properly. Does anyone know what protocol the new Outlook utilizes? Just to clarify, we want to avoid enabling Outlook on the web or mobile apps.

From what I know, the new Outlook is geared towards Exchange Online users and requires modern protocols. MAPI is pretty outdated, and Microsoft is moving away from it. So, you might find that you've hit a wall trying to use the new Outlook without enabling OWA.
It seems like the new Outlook primarily uses OWA (Outlook Web App), so you're kind of stuck unless you enable that. You might have inadvertently discovered a way to keep the classic Outlook alive!
Yeah, it’s basically just a web app at this point, so it seems like enabling OWA might be the only way to go.
