What Should a Junior Developer Focus on to Get Better Job Opportunities?

I'm currently a frontend developer with less than two years of experience and I'm stuck at a salary of 2.4 LPA. I'm actively looking to switch jobs, but I'm not getting many responses and I'm feeling lost about what I might be doing wrong. My skill set includes Next.js, Remix.run, React.js, Redux, Tanstack Query, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and shadCn. I also have decent knowledge of Express, Node, MongoDB, and web sockets. I'm working on building full stack projects and practicing machine coding questions, and I plan to learn Docker and Nest.js soon. I've attempted some easy DSA questions on LeetCode, but my consistency there has been affected due to my job and other commitments. I'm looking for advice from senior or mid-level developers on what technologies I should focus on to be competitive in today's market. What skills are in demand, and what can I do to improve my chances of landing a better job? I'm willing to put in the effort; I just need some clear direction. Thanks in advance!

You already possess enough tools in your kit. The focus should be on proving your skills through a strong resume showcasing measurable project outcomes, improving your consistency in data structures and algorithms, and honing in on one specific area like frontend development with React or Next.js. Depth in one area is often more valued over breadth.

Understood! I’ll take your advice on focusing my efforts. Time to take DSA seriously as well!

Consider working on a personal project using Elixir, as it's a niche skill with decent job opportunities and ranks high in developer surveys. This could help you stand out when applying for jobs.

I’ll definitely look into Elixir, thanks for the suggestion!

Your skills are quite solid for a junior developer, but the job market is tough right now with many hiring freezes. Focus on mastering React and TypeScript, along with testing tools like Jest or React Testing Library. Try to build projects that can showcase your skills effectively. Also, tune your resume for each job application and leverage referrals to increase your chances of landing interviews.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely work on testing and showcasing my projects like you mentioned. Finding a good job is really challenging these days!

I think focusing on more frameworks isn't the solution. You know a lot already; what you need is to build a couple of strong projects that demonstrate your expertise and get serious about DSA for a few months. Prioritize depth in your skillset.

Got it, I’ll make DSA a priority now. Thank you for your guidance!

Don't underestimate the importance of soft skills, especially communication. They can often matter more than you think based on my 20 years in the industry. Make sure you refine those skills alongside your technical abilities.

I believe I communicate well, but I’ll definitely work on improving that. Thanks for the tip!
