What Should I Do After Downloading Malware from a CS:GO Scam?

I recently downloaded malware after falling for a scam related to Counter-Strike and FaceIt. A verification bot on Discord tricked me into downloading what they claimed was an anti-cheat program, but I think I received a trojan or a backdoor instead, as both Windows Defender and MalwareBytes alerted me to potential threats. I wiped my laptop and reinstalled Windows, but I want to know if there are other security measures I should take before logging in again. I plan to change my Steam password, but I've heard about resetting the Steam API Key and I'm unsure how to do that. What other accounts should I focus on securing? Are there any precautions I should take, especially regarding my Gmail, Microsoft, or any other accounts? I saved important files on Discord for school; how can I tell if they're safe to redownload? Any tips on what else to reset or check would be great!

It’s great that you wiped your laptop and reinstalled Windows! Besides changing your Steam password, make sure you change passwords for all accounts you used on that device, especially email and any payment accounts. As for your Steam API Key, you can revoke it in the Steam API settings. That’s usually a good step after any potential breach. Be careful about downloading files again—especially from Discord; those files can be risky too.

I recommend doing a complete reinstall using a USB drive instead of the cloud, which is a bit more thorough. After reinstalling, format your disks during the wait. It's more work, but it gives peace of mind. Always be cautious with files from suspicious sources; that’s how most malware sneaks in.

Resetting all your passwords is crucial. Don’t forget to enable two-factor authentication wherever you can, especially for your email and banking apps. And about your files on Discord, if you’re unsure, it’s better to download them again from a trusted source. Better safe than sorry!
