What Should I Do to Prepare My Old PC for My Son?

I'm upgrading to a new PC after ten years, and I want to pass my current one to my 11-year-old son so he can game on it, mainly Fortnite. It still works fine, but I want to ensure it's safe and suitable for him to use. I'm thinking of removing my accounts from Windows and Chrome, but I'm wondering if I should just wipe the whole system and reinstall Windows. Would that be overkill since it's just staying in the house? What else should I do before I hand it over?

A clean install is the way to go! I recommend installing the Pro version of Windows 11 since it allows for multiple user accounts. Set up one for you as admin and a regular one for him. This way, he can ask you when he needs to install something, keeping everything safer.

But just a heads up, you can use Windows Home for multiple accounts too without needing Pro.

Definitely do a fresh reinstall of Windows. It not only clears your data but gives the system a clean slate, which is nice for performance. Make sure to update all the drivers too. It’s a good idea to let your son handle it from a non-admin account so he learns to manage it while keeping your stuff safe.

And if he starts complaining about lag in Fortnite, tell him to study hard so he can buy a better graphics card!

Or consider installing Linux if you want to give him a real challenge! It's like learning to swim, but in deeper waters.

Set up a regular user account for him and keep the admin password to yourself. Kids can easily click on something shady and end up with malware if they have admin rights. If you keep it simple, it’ll help him avoid trouble.

Yeah, go for a fresh reinstall! And while you’re at it, maybe crack it open for a quick clean and check the thermal paste if it’s an older model. It helps keep it cool, especially during those gaming sessions.

You could simply reset the PC from the Windows settings. It’s quick and makes sure all of your old info is wiped clean before handing it over. Just like factory resetting a phone!

Good idea! Don't forget about those hidden network shares that could still be accessible.
