I recently got my hands on a 6TB Western Digital external hard drive. Since then, every time I start my laptop, I'm greeted with a blue box error message saying:
"SMART Hard Disk Error
The SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, please backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics."
Even though the external drive seems to work perfectly fine, I'm suspecting this might just be a false alarm. I've tried a full diagnostics scan with WD that lasted a few hours and it passed, and I also went into the BIOS to load setup defaults, but that didn't resolve the issue. Can anyone suggest how to stop this annoying error from appearing? Any help would be greatly appreciated! 😊

First off, make sure to check the internal storage device on your laptop. You can use GSmartControl to monitor the S.M.A.R.T. status of the internal drive. If the internal drive fails the test, then you might need to replace it. You can download GSmartControl for Windows and run a short or extended self-test to check your drive's health. If it comes back okay, then the problem might be just a false alarm from the external drive!

Thanks for the tip! I downloaded GSmartControl and my internal SSD ended up failing the test. Looks like I need a new SSD after all!
