I have an interview tomorrow for a sysadmin position, and I come from a service desk II background. The job requires experience in VMware, networking, PowerShell, and Active Directory. I've informed the recruiter that I have some familiarity with these topics and that I'm eager to learn more. I'm wondering if I should expect a technical interview during this meeting with the IT manager and what kinds of questions I might face.

For me, technical interviews aren't about memorizing every detail. It's more important to understand the bigger picture and know where to find help if needed. Be prepared to explain the reasoning behind your approaches to technical problems rather than just spouting off syntax. Having a genuine conversation about these topics will go a long way!

While it's possible that the IT manager might throw in a few technical questions, they're generally more interested in your personality and how you fit into the team. If you don't know an answer, that's okay—just explaining how you would go about finding the information can really impress them. Focus on being honest and open, and if you can showcase your problem-solving approach, you're in good shape!

From my experience, hiring managers usually look for applicants who have shown some initiative in learning the required skills. They probably won't expect you to know everything, but it helps if you can discuss the main ideas behind VMware and Active Directory. Prepare to share any past experiences you have with these technologies, even if they're from your service desk role. Good luck!

It's not likely that the IT manager will conduct a full technical interview. Usually, they focus more on your fit within the team and your general capabilities. Expect some technical questions, but mostly about concepts and troubleshooting methods. Just be ready to talk about VMware and Active Directory basics, and if you have any relevant projects or experiences to share, that's a plus!
