What type of adapter does my dad need for his headphones and laptop?

My dad is currently in the hospital, and I sent him a pair of headphones with a 3.5mm male plug that has four segments. He's having trouble connecting them to his laptop because the plug is too long for the audio jack. The headphones he previously had used a shorter plug with two segments. Do you know what kind of adapter I should get for him? He'll be in the hospital for about a week, so I want to order something quickly.

It looks like the problem stems from the additional features in his new headphones. Those connections are meant for use with devices that can handle both audio and a microphone input. If the laptop only has a standard headphone jack, you’ll need a splitter for the mic and audio only. Otherwise, a simple set of headphones without extra functionalities would be your best bet!

Yeah, those can still function—plugging a headset into a regular headphone jack will work, but the mic won't. Just check if he needs those extra features before purchasing a new set!

Exactly! If plug compatibility is an issue but sound is all he needs, stick with headphones that have a simple jack!

It sounds like his headphones have a TRRRS connector, which is a bit more complex than the regular TRS or TRRS types. These are usually used with higher-end audio gear. You might want to look for a TRRRS to TRRS or TRS adapter, but I’m not sure how common those are. I found an adapter online that might work, but it’s pretty specialized for audiophile setups. Just a heads-up!

From what I’ve found, those four-segment plugs are designed for more specialized headphones that split audio channels separately. It’s pretty likely that there aren’t many adapters around for that. If possible, check his local stores or Amazon—they can deliver fairly quickly! Or, if you're visiting, grab him a standard set of headphones on your way. They’ll be much simpler to use!

Honestly, why not just get him a cheap pair of standard headphones? Almost all of them you find in stores should fit and work perfectly with his laptop without any issues. It might save you the hassle of looking for an adapter.
