What’s going on with my housemate’s massive data usage?

I live in a house with five people and have noticed that my housemate's laptop is downloading an astonishing 100GB and uploading 50GB each day, mostly at night when he's home. I've checked and my usage is only about 0.6GB, while my wife's is around 6GB, despite both of us working from home and her being on video calls. I'm concerned about why his laptop is using so much data. Do internet providers tend to throttle bandwidth after a certain point? And what could be causing this level of traffic? Is there any way to investigate without directly accessing his laptop? I'm usually the tech support in the house, but the Google Home WiFi app doesn't provide many options for digging deeper into this problem. I appreciate any suggestions, ethical or otherwise!

Your best bet is to just talk to him about the issues. He might not even realize how much bandwidth he’s taking up. Setting some ground rules or finding a better router with good QoS (Quality of Service) settings might be a good long-term solution.

With that kind of data usage, it’s almost certainly torrenting. Most home ISPs don’t actively throttle individual users unless there’s a data cap, but such extensive usage could throw up red flags. Have a talk with him; it’s about keeping the peace and ensuring everyone gets decent internet access.

For sure. Plus, you could also look into setting some limits on his device through the router if it becomes a real issue.

It sounds like your housemate might be torrenting. The uploads especially suggest that he’s sharing files. If you're really curious, you can ask him casually if he is and suggest he limits his usage during peak hours to keep the network smooth for everyone.

Yeah, torrents would definitely explain the high upload rate. You might want to mention that it's affecting your WFH productivity.

You might have a point about the mysterious traffic generation. If he’s not supposed to be torrenting or anything sketchy, it could also be a backup service or something like Dropbox pulling large files. A friendly chat might help clear things up without going too technical.

Yep, just asking him to check his settings might reveal what's hogging all that data.

I think 100GB a day is over the top for anything casual. He’s either streaming in 4K constantly, or running something in the background like game downloads, backups, or indeed, torrents. Maybe suggest he schedule downloads for late at night so it slows down.
