What’s the Best Approach to Migrate from Windows SBS 2011 to Server 2025 Essentials?

I'm gearing up to move my Windows SBS 2011 server to a new Server 2025 Essentials setup. Currently, the SBS server's handling Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and file sharing for 7 users. I've read that a direct transfer to Server 2025 isn't feasible due to the differences in Forest and Domain Levels. I've configured the current server years ago with relative ease, but this migration looks like it'll require more steps and careful handling of data. My plan is to set up the new server as a fresh domain, transfer all file shares, create new user accounts matching old ones, reroute client systems to the new AD server, and then power down the old server while monitoring the transition. Is this the most straightforward method for migrating, or do you have better suggestions?

I’ve never used Essentials, but you could set up a 2019 Essentials server, run the necessary AD prep and migration steps, and promote it to 2008 R2 for forest/domain level. By joining the 2019 system to your existing SBS 2011 domain, you can migrate data and services like DHCP and DNS. Once you transfer the FSMO roles, you’ll have a few weeks to finalize everything, but wait to do that till last. This way, you avoid having to recreate user accounts in a new domain. Just make sure everything's clear before shutting down the old system—it should simplify the process quite a bit!

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend Essentials just because of the potential complications. The cost savings may not be worth the headaches in the long run. There's a great guide out there that walks you through migrating from SBS 2011 to newer server versions, and I've found it really helpful over the years—definitely check it out! Your plan for a new domain makes sense, but prepare for some user migration challenges as they'll need to be transitioned carefully.

Sounds like a solid plan! Just keep in mind, any issues with Essentials could complicate things. Your proposed migration method might involve more work with users since you’ll have to swap their accounts over on the client machines. But if the users are set up easily, it shouldn’t be a major hurdle. Definitely stay on top of the transition and don’t rush into shutting down the old server!

You might want to consider calling in a Managed Service Provider (MSP) to help with the migration. Also, I've heard that Server 2025 isn't quite stable for Active Directory roles yet—Server 2022 might be a better option. If you go with 2022, promote it to a domain controller after configuring the Sysvol to not replicate using the file replication service. Once done, transfer your shared data and roles. Just remember, only transfer FSMO roles when you're ready to retire the old server, as moving them will trigger the old server to shut down in 21 days! Finally, don't forget to demote the SBS server once everything's moved over.

I totally agree with going for a new domain—it feels like the cleanest start. Just keep in mind that users might have issues connecting to the new server until you add them correctly since their accounts will have different IDs, even if the names are the same. You might want to look into a tool like Forensit to help rewrite the SID locally, allowing you to migrate local profiles between domains. Also, if you're using Exchange on your SBS, consider moving to Office 365 during this transition; it'll simplify things down the line!
