What’s the Best Lightweight Linux Distro for an Old PC?

I recently stumbled upon an old computer from 2008 that belonged to my dad. It's pretty slow, and here are the specs: it has a Celeron 440 CPU (1 core, 1 thread, 2GHz), 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 256GB hard drive, and an integrated GF735 GPU. Currently, it's running Windows 10, but it's barely usable. YouTube and other tasks are a struggle. I've never tried any Linux distribution before, but I'm eager to explore the GNU/Linux world as it seems like the perfect time for it. I've been considering Lubuntu, but I'd love some recommendations for other ultra-lightweight distros that could work well on this hardware!

I have a similar setup with 2GB RAM and I've been using Linux Mint XFCE, which is working great for me. Just keep in mind that with more than three browser tabs open, it can get a bit cramped. For YouTube, I like using FreeTube from the software manager. If you run into any issues, feel free to ask!

Thanks for the tip about FreeTube! I might try that to lighten the load on my old PC.

I'd recommend trying out Linux Lite. It worked really well on my older machine, though honestly, with only 2GB of RAM, you might face some sluggishness with any modern browser. Good luck with your setup!

And swapping your RAM for 2x2GB isn't a big investment—it's pretty cheap online! Might make a noticeable difference.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into Linux Lite and the RAM upgrade.

Honestly, with your specs, almost anything will have a tough time on modern web applications. But trying Debian with XFCE might be a good option as it's lighter than Windows 10. These older computers do best with older software, so even something like Windows 7 could help if you're still considering Windows options.

I've heard Debian can be tricky for newbies like me. I'm still considering the RAM and CPU upgrades before choosing a distro. Thanks!
