I'm looking to switch my old computer, which has 32 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7-4810MQ CPU, to Linux for running AutoCAD. I'm not sure if I need to pick a super lightweight distribution or if something more mainstream would be fine. Any advice on what to choose?

You definitely don't need to go for a super light distro with that hardware. If you want something user-friendly, I'd recommend Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. It's not resource-intensive and it's great for new users. Plus, it has solid community support and good documentation, so you won’t feel lost!
Honestly, your computer is more powerful than many budget systems today. For a seamless experience, you could also check out MX Linux or Antix if you want something a bit different but still effective. Most mainstream distros should run fine for you!

I’d add that Fedora or Ubuntu are also great choices if you want to explore slightly different environments. Just see what looks good to you!
